WHAT IS MAR?

What is MAR? A standard lens will only transmit around 91% of light to the eye. The rest is lost due to surface reflections on the lens. Anti-reflection coatings were originally developed to reduce reflections in camera lenses but have now become available in the optics industry for prescription glasses lenses. MAR coating is a type of optical coating applied to glasses lenses to help reduce reflection.

An anti-reflective coating is made of a very hard and thin film that is layered on the lens. The index of refraction of the material is between air and glass. This causes the intensity of the light reflected from the inner surface and the light reflected from the outer surface of the film to be nearly equal. When applied in a thickness of a quarter of light’s wavelength, the two reflections from each side of the film cancel each other out through destructive interference which minimises the glare you see.

Benefits Of MAR

A lens which has been treated with an Anti-reflective coating transmits 99.9% of the light which can provide benefits such as:

Whilst Driving

The MAR coating can help reduce glare and reflection from street lamps and headlights. This improves driver visibility and makes them more likely to see potential hazards and react to them, making the road safer for them and those around them.

Your Appearance

Furthermore, anti-reflective coatings improve the clarity of your lenses and can help eliminate reflections that others can see in your lenses. This will reduce distractions and help improve direct eye contact. This coating can make your glasses lenses look nearly invisible so people can see your eyes and facial expressions more clearly, helping you to look your best in all lighting conditions.

Whilst Working

A large percentage of glasses uses are also office workers. This means being in rooms filled with false light and constantly being in front of a computer screen. This can put a significant amount of strain on our eyes which can result in soreness and fatigue. Having an MAR coating will protect your eyes and help eliminate glare, which, in turn, will help reduce fatigue.

Increased Durability

An Anti-reflective coating can further improve the quality and increase the lifetime of your lenses by offering greater scratch resistance, durability and significant resistance to dirt and water. MAR includes an anti-scratch coating that will help prevent scratches, improve durability and help prevent damage from dirt and water.

Overall, the benefits of MAR coatings extend further than just reducing glare and reflections. It helps to improve durability as well as extending the lifetime of your glasses. Possibly most importantly, MAR coatings improve the look of your glasses and lenses. These coatings are a no-brainer for those looking to get the best out of their glasses.
